Preparing models in 3ds Max

Prepare your model in 3ds Max by setting system units and organizing the scene with Point helpers.

Setting up the scene

  1. Open Customize › Units Setup.
  2. Select Metric for the display units.
  3. Open System Unit Setup and set 1 Unit = 1 Meter.
  4. Import your model through File › Import.
note

Display units control viewport measurements. System units determine the scene's underlying scale.

Creating a hierarchy

  1. Create helpers through Create › Helpers › Point.
  2. Open Tools › Scene Explorer to inspect the hierarchy.
  3. Right-click a helper and choose Rename.

Use the hierarchy naming conventions so Expivi can interpret the helper names.

Adding basic materials

  1. Press F10 to open Render Setup.
  2. Select Scanline Renderer.
  3. Open Rendering › Material Editor › Slate Material Editor.
  4. Right-click the grid and choose Materials › Scanline › Standard.
  5. Select the material and object, then click Assign Material to Selection.

Exporting the model

Export the entire scene or select the required hierarchy parts and export only that selection. Import the resulting file into Expivi.
